What Is Acquired Blepharoptosis?

Acquired blepharoptosis, or low-lying lids, is an eyelid condition that comes about as a result of weakened and stretched eyelid muscles.

Though sagging eyelids can be a problem for patients of all ages, it is often caused by the aging process, and so older patients are more likely to experience it. Aside from aging, drooping eyelids can also come about due to underlying conditions, cataract operations, or contact lens wear.

This problem can make patients look constantly tired and may give the eyes an asymmetrical appearance. It can also result in problems with everyday activities like computer use, reading, and driving.

What Is UPNEEQ?

UPNEEQ 0.1% is an ophthalmic solution with 1mg of oxymetazoline hydrochloride. This formula is the first and only approved solution for drooping eyes by the Food and Drug Administration.

UPNEEQ can correct drooping of the upper eyelids for a better appearance. The sleepy appearance of the eyes can create appearance-related anxiety and depression among patients with acquired blepharoptosis. Drooping eyelids also reduce a person’s field of vision, since it is obstructed around the pupils.

How Does UPNEEQ Work?

UPNEEQ is administered in the same way most eyedrop solutions are administered. However, UPNEEQ must be prescribed by a doctor. Use and dosage will be directed by your doctor. The most common dosage for UPNEEQ is one drop in the affected eye per day.

After the solution is administered to the affected eye, the patient should keep their eyes closed for one to two minutes for the medication to be properly absorbed. The absorbed solution will then shorten and tighten Müller’s muscles. These muscles are responsible for opening the eyelids.

Is UPNEEQ Safe?

Yes. UPNEEQ is safe and well-tolerated. In clinical trials, UPNEEQ was proven to be safe and effective when used as directed. Common side effects (seen in 1-5% of patients) included eye irritation, eye redness, headache, eye inflammation, instillation site pain, blurred vision, and dry eye.

How Quickly Will I See the Results?

UPNEEQ lifts eyelids quickly. Most patients in clinical trials experienced a lift in their eyelids in as little as two hours. 84% of patients had some level of improvement; 74% of patients had more than a 50% improvement. In one study, some patients noticed a lift in their eyelids as fast as five minutes after the first dose.

Am I a Good Candidate for UPNEEQ?

The best candidates for UPNEEQ are people who suffer from acquired blepharoptosis but do not want to undergo surgical correction.

UPNEEQ will work best if you are not taking medications like beta-blockers, anti-hypertensive medications, cardiac glycosides, and monoamine oxidase inhibitors. This means that patients with hypertension, heart failure, or depression are not suited for UPNEEQ medication.

Your UPNEEQ Consultation

If you are unhappy with the appearance of your drooping eyelids or are experiencing issues with your field of vision, it is best to set up a consultation. An UPNEEQ consultation is the most crucial step before undergoing treatment. This will help to accurately diagnose your low-lying lids and better understand their type and cause.

Since the UPNEEQ formula will not work with some medications for hypertension, heart failure, or depression, it will be important for the acquired blepharoptosis patient to provide a complete medical history during their consultation.

How to Administer UPNEEQ

Before administering UPNEEQ eye drops, you must wash your hands. Avoid touching the dropper tip to prevent contamination. Keep the dropper from touching your eye and any other surface. People who wear contact lenses must remove them before using UPNEEQ.

Once your eyes are ready, tilt your head back and look upward. Gently pull on your lower eyelid to create a small opening. Carefully place a drop into this opening and gently close your eyes. Place a finger at the corner of your eye near the nose and press with gentle pressure for one to two minutes. Refrain from blinking and rubbing your eye.

If the doctor prescribes UPNEEQ for both of your eyes, repeat the same steps for the remaining eye. After use, throw away the container. UPNEEQ is placed in a single-use container, and saving unused medication from this container is not recommended.

UPNEEQ Results

A drop of UPNEEQ daily is effective for at least six hours. It is a medication to help patients with acquired blepharoptosis improve their droopy eyelids. UPNEEQ is ideal for temporary use and is not a substitute for blepharoplasty, or eyelid lift surgery.

How Much Does UPNEEQ Cost?

The cost of UPNEEQ medication will depend on how long you are planning to take the eyedrops. Find out more about price during your consultation.
